How the application actually works
The steps below follow the general shape of a CSC application, which most other scholarship routes broadly mirror. Expect small differences depending on the exact program and university.
Shortlist your route and universities
Decide whether you're aiming for CSC, CIS, a provincial scholarship, or a university-specific award, then shortlist three to five universities that teach your subject at the level you need.
Reach out to a supervisor (master's and PhD)
For research degrees, email prospective supervisors directly with your CV, transcripts and a short research proposal. A supervisor's informal acceptance meaningfully improves your chances during nomination.
Gather your documents
Notarized diplomas and transcripts, a passport scan, a study plan or research proposal, two recommendation letters, a physical examination form, and language test results (HSK, IELTS or TOEFL) as required.
Choose Type A or Type B
Apply through your home country's Chinese embassy (Type A) or directly to a designated university (Type B). Type B gives you more control but has its own, sometimes earlier, deadline.
Submit through the official portal
Register on the CSC Online Application System (or the CIS portal, for language scholarships) and upload every document before the deadline — late or incomplete files are the most common reason applications fail.
Wait for results
Most CSC decisions arrive three to five months after the deadline, typically in June or July for a September start. Some universities issue an earlier preliminary offer.
Collect your visa documents
Successful applicants receive an Admission Notice and a JW201 or JW202 visa form, used to apply for an X1 or X2 student visa at your local Chinese embassy or consulate.
What actually moves the needle
Contact professors early
For research degrees, a supervisor who already wants you is worth more than almost anything else in your application.
Don't miss the internal deadline
University-set deadlines are frequently earlier than the national CSC deadline — check the specific university page, not just the CSC portal.
Push your language score up early
IELTS 7.0+ or an HSK 5–6 meaningfully strengthens a competitive application; start testing well before your intended deadline.
Apply to more than one program
You can apply to several universities and scholarship routes at once — you'll only be able to accept one offer, but backups are worth having.
